‘Things are either devolving toward, or evolving from ‘nothingness’.’
‘Things are beautiful because they are fleeting’
(Leonard Karen, Wabi-Sabi for artists, Designers, poets & Philosophers)
Following on from her studies of Metal Craft in Tokyo, Miki graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2017. Miki Asai’s jewellery is inspired by the intangible, fleeting and changeable phenomenon, and how this portrays the nature of everything in the world. Her aesthetics and concept are strongly based on her Japanese aesthetic that finds beauty in impermanence, imperfection, transience and the ephemeral.
Combining fine metal work skills with extraordinarily labour intensive micro mosaics of shell and paper-mache and lacquer she creates jewellery that captures and preserves momentary beauty to own the fragments of a fleeting world, life and everything.
