Alice Barnes

Points & Pleats in Perfect Precision

Born in London, Alice found influences in the strong architectural lines that surrounded her whilst growing up. She began her studies at the Chelsea College of Art and went on to study jewellery and silversmithing at the illustrious School of Jewellery in Birmingham winning awards including the Goldsmith’s Craftsmanship and Design Award for Technological Innovation.

Alice’s jewellery collections originated in an exercise intended to challenge her creativity by limiting her materials to a small square of silver sheet. Exploring shape and form with her silversmith’s skill meant she found the possibilities were endless, creating her debut collection “Square Roots”. Developing this further her latest collection "Pleated" sees influences from the art of origami emulating stiff pleated fabric, shards of reflective glass and of course, folded paper. To create her work Alice hand carves each delicate section from wax using the ancient technique of cire perdue to cast them in sharp detail with a weighty quality resulting in sophisticated and elegant silver jewellery.
