Sea Treasures

Hand made jewellery is so special in the way it can manifest the passions & interests of the individual artist in a precious object, hoping to find a connection with someone who may feel the same way they do. We recently experienced a wonderful example of this when were were visited by the poet Louise Walker, looking for a special piece as a gift from her mother to celebrate the publishing of her collection of poems "An Ordinary Miracle" inspired by the Isles of Scilly.

Seaweed
With a flounce of satin
And a rustle on the pebbles,
The sea wears a gown
Trimmed with green weed lace,
So each sweep of her skirts
Scatters notions on the beach,
Skilfully fashioned
By the twisting of the tide.

A hank of chenille
For the wind to crochet,
Strings of dusky pearls
And fine amber beads.
Rusty sea flowers,
A posy for Miss Havisham,
Silky dulse ribbons
To bind a dainty waist.

We knew we struck a chord when we introduced Louise to the work of Ami Pepper...

Ami was born in Pembrokeshire West Wales, and her delicately sculptural jewellery explores the intricate cluster formations of shells. Ami’s inspiration and love of shells derives from her childhood memories of beach combing along the Pembrokeshire coast, the cycles of the tides washing ashore organic forms that offer intricate textures, forms and tones.

It was such a pleasure to unite Louise with Ami's beautiful Ocean Barnacle ring which suited Louise's delicate tastes and is a perfect piece for everyday wear. The twinkle of the rose cut diamond amidst organic textures in yellow gold is a special reminder of her achievement and happy memories of her favourite place by the sea.

Rocks
Shaggy with grey
Lichen or splashed as
Bright as egg yolk;
Plush viridian cushions
And stacks of broken plates.
Tidy brown loaves
Or huge abandoned lorries;
Piles of books you mean
To read. Tusks, totems, teeth.
Find a sculpted head
Thrown right back in laughter;
Two granite alligators
Shoulder slowly from the sea.

Louise Walker

"It was a delight to visit Gill Wing today and I am thrilled with my new treasure, bought by my mum to commemorate my first poetry pamphlet, ‘An Ordinary Miracle’. Many of the poems were written by the sea- in Bournemouth, St Ives and, especially the Isles of Scilly. Ami Pepper’s exquisite work captures everything I love about the sea and I was so happy when I discovered that she was born in Pembokeshire, as I lived there as a teenager and I named my press after Barafundle, a beach on that coast which is very special to my family.

So it was clearly meant to be! Thank you both, and Sarah, for making this purchase so special; it is wonderful to meet other creative people like you all."
